Four senior aides to North Carolina’s Republican candidate for governor Mark Robinson, resigned after CNN reported controversial comments Robinson allegedly made on a pornography website, Reuters reports.
Robinson, who is African American, allegedly referred to himself as a “black NAZI” and proposed the return of slavery in posts from 2008 to 2012, before his political career. The posts, which reportedly matched his social media username and email, also contained slurs against Blacks, Jews, and Muslims, as well as sexual and lewd content. Robinson, currently the state’s lieutenant governor, denied these statements and described the reports as “salacious tabloid lies.” Despite the controversy, the North Carolina Republican Party has continued to support Robinson.
The aides who stepped down included Robinson’s campaign manager, finance director, deputy campaign manager, and senior advisor. The resignations complicate Robinson’s campaign as he faces Democratic candidate Josh Stein, with the election set for November 5 and a key battleground state for the upcoming presidential contest between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump.
