Israel launched a rare airstrike on southern Beirut in Lebanon, killing senior Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Akil and 10 other Hezbollah operatives, AP News reports.
The attack targeted Hezbollah’s Dahiya stronghold, marking one of Israel’s deadliest strikes on Lebanon’s capital in decades, with at least 14 people killed and over 60 wounded. Akil was a key member of Hezbollah’s Jihad Council and commander of the elite Radwan Force, allegedly involved in significant past attacks, including the 1983 US Embassy bombing in Beirut and the US Marine Corps barracks that killed more than 300 people.
The airstrike comes after Hezbollah launched a rocket bombardment of northern Israel, following a recent mass sabotage and detonation of Hezbollah’s communication devices, which killed at least 37 people and injured around 3,000 people in Lebanon and Syria.
