Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was unharmed after what the FBI described as an apparent assassination attempt near his golf course in Palm Beach, Florida, Reuters reports.
Law enforcement reported gunshots were fired near the area, prompting US Secret Service agents to open fire after spotting an armed individual near the property. The suspect left an AK-47-style assault rifle at the scene and fled in a vehicle but was later apprehended in another county. The suspect was identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii, by CNN, Fox News, and The New York Times. Trump assured his supporters that he was unharmed in an email, while the FBI and Secret Service began investigating the incident.
This marks the second assassination attempt targeting Trump, following a previous attempt in July in Pennsylvania where Trump was injured after being grazed in the right ear by a bullet. US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expressed relief over his safety.
