Former US Vice President Dick Cheney announced he will vote for Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, marking the first time he has endorsed a Democrat for president, AP News reports.
This announcement follows his daughter Liz Cheney’s endorsement of Harris earlier in the week. Both Cheneys, vocal critics of former President Donald Trump, emphasized their opposition to Trump rather than full support for Harris. In his statement, Dick Cheney said Trump “can never be trusted with power again” and urged citizens to prioritize the Constitution over partisanship.
The Cheneys initially supported Trump in 2016 but distanced themselves following Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. During Liz Cheney’s reelection campaign in 2022, both Cheneys had openly condemned Trump’s actions, with Dick Cheney referring to Trump as a “coward” for trying to steal the election. Several other Republicans, including Rep. Adam Kinzinger, have similarly distanced themselves from Trump and supported Harris.
Trump dismissed the endorsement, calling the Cheneys “irrelevant RINOs” (Republicans in name only), while Harris’ campaign expressed appreciation for Cheney’s decision to prioritize country over party.
