The Biden administration has taken action against Russian efforts to spread disinformation ahead of the November presidential election, seizing Kremlin-run websites and charging two Russian state media employees, AP News reports.
The Justice Department indicted two individuals linked to Russian state media for funding a US-based content creation company to spread pro-Russian propaganda on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Additionally, 32 domains used by Russia to spread propaganda were seized. The State Department also sanctioned Russian media outlets and designated them as “foreign missions,” requiring them to register with the US government.
These actions reflect the US government’s heightened concern over Russia’s attempts to influence American elections, particularly through disinformation and manipulation on social media. Intelligence officials highlight Russia as the primary election threat, continuing its efforts to interfere in US elections, similar to its activities in 2016.
