The Democratic Republic of Congo’s government reported that at least 129 people were killed during an attempted mass escape from Makala prison in the capital Kinshasa, Reuters reports.
A fire also broke out in the prison’s administrative building, food depots, and hospital, injuring 59 people. A prison official stated that no prisoners managed to escape, and those who tried were killed. The situation is now under control, according to Interior Minister Shabani Lukoo. The government is investigating the incident.
