A gunman shot five people, two critically, during New York City’s West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn, an annual celebration of Caribbean culture, AP News reports.
The shooter targeted a specific group along the parade route, critically injuring two people while three others sustained non-life-threatening injuries, before fleeing the scene. Despite the shooting, the parade continued, and the police are seeking video footage from bystanders to aid in the investigation.
The parade, which attracts large crowds and features vibrant costumes and music, has a history of violence, though recent years have been more peaceful celebrations. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who was marching in the parade, expressed his concern and called for an end to gun violence.
