Apple recently cut about 100 jobs in its digital services group, marking a rare move as the company shifts its priorities within this critical division, Bloomberg reports.
The layoffs affected several teams under Senior Vice President Eddy Cue, primarily teams working on the Apple Books app and Apple Bookstore, as well as some roles in the Apple News team. Despite the job cuts, services have been a significant growth area for Apple, contributing over 22% of its sales in the most recent fiscal year. Affected employees have been given 60 days to find another position within the company.
Layoffs are uncommon at Apple, though the company has made multiple rounds of reductions in 2024, including shutting down its self-driving car project and a microLED display effort. This move contrast with larger layoffs at other tech companies like Cisco and Intel, which are reducing their workforces by 7% and over 15%, respectively, due to slowing growth and a shift towards artificial intelligence.
