Michael Sparks, the first rioter to enter the US Capitol during the January 6th attack, was sentenced to over four years in prison, AP News reports.
Sparks, who believed the 2020 election was fraudulent, played a key role in the riot by entering the Capitol through a broken window and chasing a police officer, which emboldened other rioters. Despite expressing some remorse, US District Judge Timothy Kelly emphasized the seriousness of his actions, calling them a “national disgrace.” Sparks was convicted on six charges, including interfering with police during a civil disorder.
More than 1,400 people have been charged in connection with the Capitol riot. Around 950 riot defendants have been convicted and sentenced, with over 600 receiving a prison sentence ranging from a few days to 22 years.
