Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has ended his campaign and endorsed Republican candidate Donald Trump, marking a significant shift in the 2024 presidential race, Reuters reports.
Kennedy, who initially launched his campaign as a Democrat and later switched to run as an independent, made the announcement at a press conference before joining Trump at a rally in Arizona. This endorsement came after several meetings with Trump and his aides, where they found common ground on issues such as border security and free speech.
Trump praised Kennedy for raising important issues and announced that, if re-elected, he would create a commission on assassination attempts and release files related to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, RFK Jr.’s uncle.
Kennedy’s decision to endorse Trump drew criticism from his family, particularly his sister Kerry Kennedy, who said it betrayed their family’s values. Once a significant figure in the race, Kennedy’s support dwindled from a peak of 20% in polls to just 4% as the campaign landscape shifted.
