Alphabet’s Waymo has reportedly doubled its paid rides to 100,000 per week in just over three months, Reuters reports.
This growth follows the company’s expansion into new service areas and a broader customer base, including the San Francisco Peninsula and parts of Los Angeles, adding to its existing operations in San Francisco and Phoenix. This expansion comes as Alphabet plans a $5 billion investment in Waymo, despite ongoing skepticism and regulatory challenges surrounding autonomous vehicle technology. Waymo, with a fleet of about 700 vehicles, remains the only US firm offering paid uncrewed robotaxi rides.
The autonomous vehicle market is becoming more competitive, with upcoming developments from Tesla, General Motors’ Cruise, Amazon’s Zoox, and China-based WeRide, each advancing their own robotaxi technologies and strategies.
