Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stated that if elected, he would consider ending the $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles (EVs) and appoint Tesla CEO Elon Musk to a cabinet or advisory role, praising Musk as “a very smart guy,” Reuters reports.
Although a fan of electric cars, Trump emphasized his support for gasoline-powered vehicles and hybrids, predicting a smaller market for them due to cost and battery limitations. He criticized Biden administration policies pushing for more EV production, questioning the effectiveness of such incentives. Trump also suggested imposing tariffs to discourage automakers from exporting vehicles from Mexico to the US while encouraging foreign automakers to build cars in the US to create jobs domestically.
Additionally, Trump criticized Google following a court ruling that labeled the company as an illegal monopoly, suggesting they would face significant consequences but did not specify what actions he would take. Regarding TikTok, he expressed reluctance to ban the app, citing free speech concerns, but mentioned that its Chinese owner ByteDance might sell its US assets.
