Blinken to Arrive in Israel to Push for Gaza Ceasefire

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is visiting Israel as part of an effort by Washington to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and end the 10-month conflict between Israel and Hamas, Reuters reports.

This marks Blinken’s ninth trip to the region since the conflict began in October last year and he will meet with the Israeli Prime Minister and other senior officials. The visit follows recent US proposals, supported by mediators Qatar and Egypt, which aim to bridge the remaining gaps between the warring parties. US officials express cautious optimism but acknowledge that challenges remain.

European foreign ministers from the UK, France, Germany, and Italy have expressed support for the ceasefire talks and caution against escalation. Israel’s negotiating team expresses cautious optimism, while Hamas accuses Israel of adding conditions to hinder the ceasefire efforts.

The negotiations occur amid concerns of regional escalation, particularly after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, which has led to Iranian threats of retaliation against Israel. The US has warned Iran against such actions, suggesting severe consequences.
