Hamas has appointed Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar as its new political leader, following the assassination of former political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran, last week, Reuters reports.
Sinwar, known for orchestrating the major October 7 attack on Israel, has been in hiding and evading Israeli attempts to kill him since the conflict began. Sinwar, a seasoned militant leader, spent significant time in Israeli prisons and is now the most powerful Hamas leader alive. Sinwar’s leadership is seen as a direct challenge to Israel and a continuation of Hamas’ extremist approach. Israel, while not claiming responsibility for Haniyeh’s assassination, has acknowledged killing other senior Hamas figures.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains committed to continuing military actions in Gaza. The White House has not commented directly but is wary that Sinwar’s leadership might reinforce Hamas’ hardline stance and complicate ceasefire negotiations.
