Kamala Harris Picks Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for Vice President

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 election, Reuters reports.

Harris, who became the Democratic candidate after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign, praised Walz’s leadership and executive experience. Walz, who has been Minnesota’s governor since 2018, has a background as a schoolteacher, football coach, and US Army National Guard veteran. His progressive policies include free school meals, climate change goals, middle-class tax cuts, and expanded paid leave.

Walz gained national prominence during the selection process and has been vocal in his criticism of Trump and his running mate, JD Vance. His strong ties to rural voters who have traditionally supported Republican rival Donald Trump, will bolster Harris’ appeal in the Midwest and counter Trump. However, the Trump campaign criticized the choice, labeling both Harris and Walz as out of touch with most Americans.

Walz has faced criticism over his handling of the 2020 George Floyd protests but has also been recognized for his efforts in seeking justice for Floyd.
