Mexican drug kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, were arrested in El Paso, Texas, marking a significant victory for US authorities, Reuters reports.
Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, and Guzman Lopez, one of El Chapo’s four sons, known as “Los Chapitos,” who inherited their father’s cartel operations, face multiple charges for their roles in drug trafficking, including fentanyl, which has become a leading cause of death among young Americans. The two were detained after landing in a private plane by a joint FBI and Homeland Security operation.
Their arrests could trigger instability within the Mexican cartel, as previous captures of major leaders have led to violence and power struggles. The US had placed significant bounties on their capture, $15 million for Zambada and $5 million for Guzman Lopez, reflecting their importance in the drug trade.
