Israel Orders Evacuation of Part of Gaza Humanitarian Zone, 70 Palestinians Killed in Airstrike

The Israeli military ordered the evacuation of part of a humanitarian zone in the Gaza Strip, triggering a new wave of Palestinian displacement, AP News reports.

This new order reduces the humanitarian zone by about 10 square kilometers, affecting the southern city of Khan Younis, which had become crowded with refugees. The humanitarian zone, first declared in November, was expanded in May to accommodate those fleeing from Rafah. Despite its designation, the zone lacks proper sanitation, medical facilities, and adequate aid.

Israeli airstrikes around Khan Younis killed at least 70 people, and another strike near Al-Aqsa Hospital killed one and injured three. The military stated that the evacuation is necessary for an operation against Hamas militants.

The war, which began with a Hamas assault on southern Israel on October 7, has resulted in over 39,000 Palestinian deaths and 89,800 injuries. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is visiting the US to meet President Joe Biden to discuss support and address Congress.
