Cyril Ramaphosa Sworn in for a Second Term as South Africa’s President

Cyril Ramaphosa was sworn in for a second term as South Africa’s president in a ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, after being reelected with the support of a coalition of parties, Associated Press reports.

Ramaphosa leads the country’s first coalition government after the African National Congress (ANC) lost its parliamentary majority. The coalition includes major parties like the Democratic Alliance and the Inkatha Freedom Party, with differing views on key issues, posing challenges to Ramaphosa’s leadership. The new Cabinet formation date is yet to be announced.

During the ceremony, Ramaphosa emphasized the need for cooperation to address the nation’s issues, acknowledging public disappointment with past performance and the deep inequalities in South African society. He promised to focus on creating job opportunities and providing basic services.
