Apple has announced new AI-driven features for iPhones, iPads, and Macs, branding the technology as “Apple Intelligence,” Associated PRess reports.
Despite its marketing prowess, Apple acknowledged the need to catch up with AI leaders like Microsoft and Google. Apple plans to integrate ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, into its virtual assistant Siri, enhancing its capabilities and making it more user-friendly. Siri will be able to handle more tasks and interact with third-party devices, signaling its presence with flashing lights on the display screen. Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasized that the new AI features are meant to provide “personal intelligence,” making the technology more accessible and useful for users. This integration will be part of free software updates expected later this year. Apple aims to empower users rather than replace them with AI and users will have the option to disable any unwanted AI features.
Additionally, Apple announced the implementation of Rich Communications Service (RCS) for its iMessage app to improve texting between iPhones and Android devices, along with a new feature to schedule text messages.
