A member of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was stabbed and injured in Mannheim while confronting someone tearing down an election poster, Associated Press reports.
The attacker used a boxcutter and has been detained and placed in a psychiatric hospital. The candidate, whose name wasn’t disclosed, sustained non-life-threatening cuts and is hospitalized. Mannheim’s mayor condemned the attack, emphasizing its threat to democracy. Police indicated that the attacker may not have known the victim was an AfD politician.
This incident follows a recent fatal knife attack in Mannheim, where an Afghan man attacked members of an anti-Islam group, Pax Europa, killing one police officer and injuring five others.
