German Police Officer Fatally Stabbed During Anti-Islam Rally

A 29-year-old German police officer has died from injuries sustained in a knife attack during an anti-Islam rally in Mannheim, which also left five others injured, Associated Press reports.

The attack occurred during an event by Pax Europa, an organization that warns against the influence of political Islam. The attacker, a 25-year-old Afghan immigrant, stabbed the officer multiple times in the head and neck. Despite emergency surgery and being placed in an artificial coma, the officer succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. The other injured victims were men aged 25, 36, 42, and 54, with the 54-year-old initially in life-threatening condition but now stable. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed deep grief and praised the officer’s dedication to public safety.

The attacker was shot and wounded by another officer and is currently hospitalized under suspicion of attempted murder. Authorities have not determined a motive, as the suspect was not in a condition to be questioned.
