US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito Under Fire After Upside-Down Flag Flown at His Home

In January 2021, an upside-down US flag was flown over Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s home, a symbol of distress and protest, which was seen by some as supporting false claims of election fraud by Trump supporters, Associated Press reports.

Alito stated the flag was briefly flown by his wife during a dispute with neighbors and clarified that he had no involvement. Alito’s wife allegedly hung the flag in protest after a neighbor blamed her for the January 6 riot and used vulgar language. Similarly, Justice Clarence Thomas also faces scrutiny due to his wife’s involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Virginia.

Public trust in the Supreme Court has declined, especially after the controversial 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade and reports of justices receiving undisclosed gifts and trips from wealthy benefactors. This incident exacerbates concerns about the Supreme Court’s perceived partisanship and ethical lapses as it handles cases involving Trump and the January 6 Capitol riot. The Court has adopted a code of ethics, but it lacks enforcement mechanisms.
