US President Joe Biden announced new tariffs on various Chinese goods including electric vehicles (EVs), batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminum, and medical equipment, Associated Press reports.
These tariffs are a response to what Biden views as unfair trade practices, particularly China’s heavy subsidization of its industries, which he claims gives them an unfair advantage in global trade. Biden emphasized the need for fair competition, stating that American workers can outperform anyone as long as the playing field is level. He criticized China for pouring state money into its companies, characterizing it as cheating rather than competition.
The new tariffs are expected to have minimal short-term inflationary impact but could affect specific industries such as electric vehicles, solar energy, and steel. They are set to be phased in over the next three years, with some not taking effect until 2026. Biden’s administration believes these tariffs won’t escalate tensions with China, but there’s anticipation that China will retaliate in some form.
China has condemned the tariffs as “bullying” and warning that they would harm bilateral cooperation. Both Biden and Trump have taken tough stances on China, but with different approaches. Biden favors targeted tariffs to protect key industries and workers, while Trump has threatened broader tariffs on all imports from China and other countries.
