Sánchez had taken five days off to reflect on his position after a court opened preliminary proceedings against his wife on corruption allegations. After days of speculation, Sánchez declared his intention to remain in office and continue leading Spain’s government “with even more strength.” He vowed that his decision would mark a significant change and promised to curtail the “smear campaign” against him and his family.
The prime minister’s emotional letter expressing support for his wife and his need for time to decide on his priorities had put the country in suspense. In it, he criticized the legal probe against his wife as a personal attack and questioned the motives of the right-wing platform behind the allegations.
