US President Joe Biden delivered a lighthearted roast at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, poking fun at his Republican rival Donald Trump, his own age, and the Washington press corps, Reuters reports.
Biden, 81, joked about his age, saying, “Yes, age is an issue. I’m a grown man, running against a 6-year-old,” in a playful jab at Trump, who is 77. He added, “Age is the only thing we have in common. My vice president actually endorses me,” referring to the fracture between Trump and his former vice president Mike Pence. Trump criticized Biden’s performance as “really bad” and an “absolute disaster” on his Truth Social platform.
Meanwhile, protests outside the event criticized Biden’s support for Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, chanting about journalists’ deaths in Gaza and urging attendees to boycott the dinner. The demonstration highlighted the ongoing controversy surrounding US policy in the Middle East and the role of the media in covering it.
