Hamas Official Says Group Would Disarm if an Independent Palestinian State is Established

Khalil al-Hayya, a high-ranking Hamas official, stated that the militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along pre-1967 borders, Associated Press reports.

Al-Hayya suggests that the group would disarm and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders. He also expressed Hamas’ willingness to join the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to form a unified government for Gaza and the West Bank.

However, it’s unlikely Israel would accept such terms, as its current leadership has vowed to crush Hamas following the Oct. 7 attack and opposes the creation of a Palestinian state in the territories captured in the 1967 Mideast war.
