The United States vetoed a UN resolution aimed at granting full UN membership to Palestine: The Security Council vote saw 12 in favor, the US opposed, and two abstentions, Associated Press reports.
The resolution aimed to recommend Palestine’s admission as the 194th member of the United Nations to the UN General Assembly, where there are no vetoes. With over 140 countries already recognizing Palestine, its admission was expected to be approved by a significant majority. This marks their second attempt at full membership, following a failed bid in 2011.
The US cited the need for direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine for statehood and emphasized commitment to a two-state solution. Israel opposed the resolution, claiming it’s disconnected from reality and rewards the perpetrators behind the Oct. 7 attack.
