Israel is on high alert amid fears of retaliation from Iran or its proxies after the killing of a senior Iranian officer in Damascus, with countries like India, France, and Russia warning against travel to the region, Reuters reports.
The killing of Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, along with six other officers, in an airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus has heightened concerns of reprisals. Although Israel did not claim responsibility for the attack, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused Israel and vowed retaliation, describing the incident as an attack on Iranian soil.
Israeli officials are preparing for potential retaliation, with Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stressing Israel’s readiness to defend itself. In anticipation of potential escalation, Israel has bolstered its air defenses and called back reservists along its northern border, where it frequently exchanges fire with Hezbollah.
