Trump Says US States Should Determine Abortion Law

Former US President Donald Trump stated that he believes abortion laws should be determined by individual US states rather than a national ban, Reuters reports.

In a social media video, Trump expressed support for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and to protect the life of the mother, as well as for in-vitro fertilization. Trump did not commit to seeking a national ban on abortion if re-elected, emphasizing that states should decide through legislation or voting. He credited himself for the 2022 Supreme Court decision that ended federal protections for abortion rights, attributing it to his conservative appointments to the court during his presidency.

The Republican Party has faced challenges in responding to the aftermath of the 2022 Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, which led to Democratic victories in some elections. Since the launch of his campaign, Trump has largely avoided discussing abortion.
