Tens of thousands gathered in Budapest to protest against Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government, led by Peter Magyar, they demanded Orban’s resignation and criticized corruption within the government, Reuters reports.
Magyar, 43, gained widespread attention in February for exposing alleged corruption within the government, including allegations of a centralized propaganda machine and interference in a corruption case, triggering investigations by prosecutors. Magyar, previously married to Orban’s former justice minister, plans to launch his own political movement to challenge the prime minister.
The protest occurs against the backdrop of a recent sex abuse scandal that resulted in the downfall of two of Orban’s key political allies, including the former President and former justice minister.
