Iran vowed retaliation against Israel following a suspected Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in Syria that killed seven officers, including a top Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander, Reuters reports.
At the officers’ funeral in Tehran, IRGC commander-in-chief Major General Hossein Salami and former Guards commander Mohsen Rezaei vowed to punish Israel for the attack. The funeral coincided with Iran’s annual Quds Day, marked by pro-Palestinian rallies nationwide, expressing support for Palestinians seeking East Jerusalem as their capital. Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad leader Ziad al-Nakhala participated in the Tehran rally.
The airstrike, part of a series targeting Iranian officials in Syria, raised tensions between the two countries and prompted Israel to bolster its air defense units. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of reprisals against any threats to Israel.
