Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has appointed long-time economic adviser Mohammad Mustafa as the new prime minister amidst US pressure to reform the Palestinian Authority (PA), Associated Press reports.
Mustafa, a US-educated economist, will lead a technocratic government in the West Bank, potentially tasked with administering Gaza. However, challenges include opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
Mustafa is tasked with unifying the administration between the West Bank and Gaza, implementing reforms, and combating corruption. Mustafa’s background includes senior positions at the World Bank and chairmanship of the Palestine Investment Fund.
