Indian authorities have arrested four individuals suspected of involvement in the gang rape of a Spanish tourist and assaulting her partner in the eastern state of Jharkhand, Al Jazeera reports.
The victims, a travel blogger with more than 200,000 followers on Instagram and her partner, were on a motorcycle tour traveling through the Dumka district and had stopped to set up a tent for the night when they were attacked by a group of seven men. The assailants proceeded to assault them, and the woman was subjected to rape while her partner was physically assaulted.
The couple were rescued by a patrol car after the assault and taken to a local hospital. Despite the swift apprehension of some suspects, the search continues for the remaining perpetrators.
This incident highlights the challenge of sexual violence against women in India, particularly affecting minority tribal communities, with societal taboos and low conviction rates contributing to the problem.
