US President Joe Biden announced that the US plans to conduct emergency humanitarian aid airdrops into Gaza following a deadly incident where over 100 Palestinians were killed, Associated Press reports.
The decision followed a situation where many Palestinians were killed and injured after Israeli troops opened fire on a crowd trying to obtain goods from an aid convoy. Although Israel cited a stampede and threats toward troops, a Gaza hospital reported that over 80% of the wounded were shot.
The US would collaborate with Jordan to provide aid via airdrops and explore additional avenues, potentially including a marine corridor. The decision came after extensive deliberation within the US government, balancing concerns about aid distribution efficiency with the urgent need for assistance.
Biden also reaffirmed US support for Ukraine and discussed efforts to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
