Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus lunar lander has successfully touched down on the moon, marking the first US landing on the lunar surface in over 50 years, Associated Press reports.
Despite initial communication challenges, Intuitive Machines confirmed the landing and indicated that equipment was transmitting from the lunar surface. The mission faced some technical hiccups, including a last-minute navigation system switch, before the lander successfully landed near the Malapert A crater. The landing site near the moon’s south pole was chosen for its potential access to frozen water.
This achievement makes Intuitive Machines the first private company to achieve a lunar landing, facilitated by a NASA-supported initiative to promote commercial lunar missions. The lander carried six experiments for NASA and payloads from other entities.
