Social Media CEOs Testify Before Senate on Child Exploitation

CEOs of major social media companies, including Meta, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, addressing concerns about the impact of social media on young people, Associated Press reports.

Lawmakers and parents are increasingly concerned about issues such as sexual predators, addictive features, suicide, eating disorders, unrealistic beauty standards, and bullying. The hearing included recorded testimonies from kids and parents who experienced exploitation on social media, and parents who lost children to suicide silently held up pictures of their deceased kids.

Senators criticized the companies for design choices, safety failures, and prioritizing engagement and profit over safety. The CEOs faced questions about personal responsibility, compensation for victims, and the harms caused by their platforms. The executives emphasized existing safety tools and collaboration with nonprofits and law enforcement.

Senators pressed Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on compensation for victims, leading Zuckerberg to address the parents and express remorse for their experiences, emphasizing Meta’s ongoing efforts for child protection. Despite an apology, advocates and parents believe the companies are not doing enough to protect minors.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel announced Snapchat’s support for a federal bill creating legal liability for platforms recommending harmful content to minors, while TikTok and X expressed support for relevant legislation.
