Iran-aligned Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah has announced the suspension of all its military operations against US troops in the region to avoid embarrassing the Iraqi government, Reuters reports.
Kataib Hezbollah, a powerful faction within the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, claims to have been involved in more than 150 attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria since the Gaza war began. The decision follows a drone attack near the Jordan-Syria border that resulted in the death of three US troops. The group emphasized that it will continue defending its people in Gaza through other means.
The Iraqi government has condemned the attacks on US forces but warned that regional escalation would persist as long as the Gaza war continues. Kataib Hezbollah’s decision to suspend operations came after intensive efforts by Iraq’s Prime Minister Shia Al-Sudani to prevent further escalation.
The US has vowed to respond to the recent attack, while Kataib Hezbollah mentioned disagreements with allies, including Iran, over its attacks.
