A jury has awarded $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll in a defamation case against former US President Donald Trump, bringing the total amount he must pay her to $88.3 million, Associated Press reports.
Carroll accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a Manhattan department store in 1996. This verdict, combined with a previous $5 million sexual assault and defamation verdict from another jury last year, brings the total amount Trump must pay to $88.3 million. The jury awarded $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages.
Trump, who stormed out of the courtroom during closing arguments, said he would appeal, claiming the legal system is being used as a political weapon. The case comes as Trump faces multiple legal challenges, including 91 criminal charges in four indictments.
