US Congress Approves Funding to Avert Government Shutdown

US President Joe Biden signed a short-term spending bill that will keep the federal government operating until early March, averting a potential partial government shutdown, Associated Press reports.

The bill passed with large bipartisan majorities in Congress, with a vote of 77-18 in the Senate and 314-108 in the House, does not address additional aid for Ukraine, as negotiations on a border security measure continue.

The funding covers various agencies overseeing agriculture, veterans affairs, energy, transportation, and housing until March 1, while funding for the rest of the federal government extends to March 8.

The short-term measure is intended to provide lawmakers with additional time to work on full-year spending bills for the fiscal year ending September 30.
