US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been discharged from the hospital after a two-week stay for complications from prostate cancer treatment, according to the Pentagon, Reuters reports.
Austin, 70, was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on December 22 for prostate cancer treatment and returned on January 1 due to complications, including a urinary tract infection.
His hospitalization was not disclosed until four days later, and details were not specified until January 9. Austin expressed gratitude for the care received at Walter Reed and confirmed that he will not require further cancer treatment.
US President Joe Biden expressed confidence in Austin despite criticism over the delay in informing Biden about the hospitalization. The Defense Department’s inspector general’s office will review the handling of Austin’s hospitalization later this month.
