Gabriel Attal Becomes France’s Youngest Prime Minister

French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Gabriel Attal, 34, to succeed Elisabeth Borne as the country’s youngest-ever and first openly gay Prime Minister, Associated Press reports.

Attal, who previously served as government spokesperson and education minister, replaces Elisabeth Borne, who resigned amidst political turmoil over an immigration law enhancing deportation powers.

Attal aims to focus on security, promoting authority and respect, strengthening public services, and better controlling immigration. Critics questioned Attal’s limited experience, Paris upbringing, and loyalty to Macron.

Macron and Attal will work together to form a new government, aiming to revitalize Macron’s presidency. The new prime minister faces challenges, including Macron’s centrists losing their parliamentary majority and navigating tough negotiations on key issues like the immigration bill.
