The new indictment alleges Menendez helped a friend, New Jersey real estate developer Fred Daibes, secure a multimillion-dollar deal with a Qatari investment fund. Prosecutors claim that Menendez introduced the friend to a member of Qatar’s royal family, met Qatari officials, and made public statements supportive of Qatar while the real estate deal was being negotiated.
Menendez is accused of accepting bribes, including gold bars and cash, from Daibes in exchange for various corrupt acts that favored Qatar’s government. The senator, who is already charged with secretly advancing Egypt’s interests, denies any wrongdoing.
