At Least 84 People Killed in Blasts at Ceremony of Slain General, Iran Says

At least 84 people have been killed and 284 others injured after two explosions occurred minutes apart during a commemoration event in Kerman, Iran, marking the fourth anniversary of the killing of General Qassem Soleimani, Associated Press reports.

An earlier death toll of 103 was revised lower after officials discovered that some names had been repeated on a list of victims.

The Iranian state media described it as a “terroristic” attack, and no group has claimed responsibility. While Israel has targeted Iran over its nuclear program, it has not conducted mass-casualty bombings before.

Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq in 2020, was a prominent military figure and the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force, his killing escalated tensions between Iran and the US.
