A jury awarded $148 million in damages to two former Georgia election workers, Wandrea “Shaye” Moss and Ruby Freeman, in a defamation lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani, Associated Press reports.
The women were targeted with false conspiracy theories, including accusations of ballot fraud, by Giuliani and other Republicans in their efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Moss and Freeman, who faced racist threats and harassment due to the accusations, emotionally testified during the trial.
The jury awarded $75 million in punitive damages, with each woman receiving approximately $36 million in other damages. Giuliani, who had already been found liable, vowed to appeal, calling the verdict absurd.
