The United States vetoed a proposed UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, Reuters reports.
The draft resolution, put forward by the United Arab Emirates, received support from thirteen members, while Britain abstained. The US argued that the draft resolution was rushed and imbalanced, lacking condemnation of Hamas, while the UK abstained due to the absence of a Hamas condemnation.
The US and Israel oppose a ceasefire, believing it would benefit Hamas, and instead support temporary halts in fighting to protect civilians and secure the release of hostages taken by Hamas.
Israel’s Ambassador stated that a ceasefire would only be possible with the return of hostages and the destruction of Hamas.
