US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a bilateral meeting outside San Francisco, marking their first in-person encounter in a year, AP News reports.
Both leaders expressed a commitment to open communication and agreed on several key points, including curbing illicit fentanyl production and resuming military-to-military communications.
Biden urged Xi to use China’s influence to calm global tensions, particularly in the Iran-Israel-Hamas conflict and pressed China to withhold military support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The leaders also had a discussion on Taiwan, where Biden reaffirmed the “One China” policy but emphasized the US commitment to arming Taiwan. China asserted no plans to invade Taiwan but faced criticism for military buildup around the island.
Economic challenges in China were raised, with Xi pressing Biden to lift sanctions and change export control policies. However, there was no indication of whether Biden would agree to take such steps.
