House Passes Bill to Avert Government Shutdown

The House voted overwhelmingly to prevent a government shutdown after new Republican Speaker Mike Johnson faced opposition from hard-right conservatives, AP News reports.

The proposal by Johnson received bipartisan support but faced opposition from hard-right conservatives. The House voted 336-95 to prevent a government shutdown, with 93 Republicans voting against the plan.

The plan temporarily funds some federal agencies until January 19 and others until February 2. It does not include deep cuts demanded by conservatives or President Joe Biden’s request for nearly $106 billion for Ukraine, Israel, border security, and other supplemental funds.
