Democrats and abortion rights advocates secured significant victories in the recent US elections, indicating that reproductive rights remain a significant issue for Democrats ahead of the 2024 presidential race, Reuters reports.
In Virginia, Democrats gained control of both legislative chambers, dealing a blow to Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, who had campaigned on restricting abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
In Kentucky, Democratic Governor Andy Beshear secured a second term, even in a state that had voted for Trump by more than 25 percentage points in 2020.
In Ohio, voters approved a constitutional amendment that guarantees abortion rights, even though the state leaned Republican. This marked another victory for abortion access advocates since the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision.
