Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in an interview that Israel would take “overall security responsibility” in Gaza indefinitely after its war with Hamas, AP News reports.
One month into the ongoing conflict, Netanyahu’s comments suggest that Israel intends to maintain long-term control over Gaza and exert authority beyond the conflict’s resolution.
While Netanyahu expressed willingness to consider temporary ceasefires to allow for aid delivery or the release of hostages held by Hamas, he ruled out a general ceasefire until all hostages are released.
More than 10,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Health Ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza. In Israel, around 1,400 people have died, primarily civilians killed during the initial incursion by Hamas.
