Israeli forces have surrounded Gaza City and cut off the northern part of the territory as they prepare to enter the city, AP News reports.
Israeli media reported that troops are expected to enter the city on Monday or Tuesday, and they anticipate fierce street battles with Hamas militants who have prepared for years.
More than 1.5 million Palestinians, around 70% of the population, have fled their homes due to the conflict following Hamas’ incursion into Israel on Oct. 7.
The situation is also causing regional tensions, with Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group exchanging fire along the border in the north.
